When you need a new roof installation in Charlotte you have the choice of a number of roofing contractors. How do you know which one to choose?

Probably one of the best ways is if you happen to know someone who has had a new roof installation and can recommend the company that did the work. (They may even be able to help you steer clear of a company with whom they had problems).

However, if you don’t know anyone personally there are a few things to look out for.

  • Obviously you want to hire a contractor that has been in the roofing business for a while. A business with a track record is at least more likely to be around some years down the line if something should go wrong and you need to call them back under their guarantee.
While Bulldog Roofing + Construction is a new name in Lake Norman, Jim is no newbie to the construction business. With over 26 years of experience in all phases of commercial and residential construction, Bulldog Roofing + Construction has the experience to get the job done, on-time and for a great price!
  • It is well worth checking to see if the company is registered with the Better Business Bureau and also if they are members of the local Chamber of Commerce.
  • Ask if the company employs all its own staff or whether they use sub contractors. Very often, sub contractors are paid on a “per job” basis. This can lead to poor workmanship as the sub contractor will try to get the work completed as quickly as possible.
  • Ask for references. A good contractor will be happy to supply references and show you a portfolio of recently completed work. You will also be able to visit any of the addresses locally and take a look at the roof for yourself. Bulldog Roofing + Construction will be happy to supply you with references – just ask!
  • Make certain that the company will provide you with a written contract and estimate. Ask if they require a deposit. A bigger contractor which is well established will not normally ask for a deposit. A smaller company may do, in order to cover the costs of scaffolding, materials and so on, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, be wary of any business that asks for a deposit amounting to more than 30% of the estimated total cost.
  • Be certain to ask about insurance. Not only ask about it, but ask to see a copy of their policy. They need to have workplace insurance and also liability insurance. If they do not have these and there is a problem you, as the homeowner, could be held responsible for any accidents.
  • It may seem obvious, but check that the contractor has a permanent business address, telephone number and email. You really don’t want to have a “storm chaser” working on your roof who may simply disappear and never be seen again.
  • It is also worthwhile checking if the company is a member of any local or national industry associations. Are they also registered installers for certain products? If they are you, can be sure that the manufacturers of those products will have checked the company out as they do not want their reputation tarnished by installers who do shoddy work.

These guidelines should help you to choose an installer that is reputable and will honor any guarantees that they make.
